Island Escape & Hike to Mokoliʻi, Oahu
Unique Geological Landmark Near Oahu’s Windward Coast
Mokoliʻi, often called “Chinaman’s Hat” due to its striking conical shape, is a small volcanic islet off the coast of Kaneohe on Oahu’s windward side in Hawaii. This beloved natural formation rises sharply from the turquoise waters, creating a distinctive silhouette against the lush Koʻolau mountain range nearby. The islet is part of a coral reef system and is accessible at low tide, making it a unique blend of volcanic and marine features.
The rocky peak is made from basalt lava—the remnants of ancient volcanic activity that shaped the Hawaiian Islands—and its steep cliffs are partially covered with native coastal vegetation. Visitors often enjoy the striking contrast between the green volcanic rock and the cerulean ocean. The islet holds cultural significance in local Hawaiian legends, often linked to stories about Hawaiian gods and warriors.
Mokoliʻi offers spectacular views of the surrounding marine life, including coral reefs and occasional sightings of monk seals resting on the rocks or turtles in the waters. Its proximity to Kaneohe Bay and the lush surrounding landscape makes it a standout destination for those seeking a quiet and photogenic spot outside the more crowded beaches of Oahu.
Ideal for day trips, it combines natural beauty, cultural resonance, and a moderate physical challenge, drawing both nature lovers and adventure seekers to witness one of Oahu’s most charming outdoor landmarks.
